Legends of Oral Health

Because of the lack of proper information disseminated, confusion and vague information are carried on by the people. This wrong information can bring a lot of wrong interpretation pertaining to having proper oral health. Among the legends or myths are the following:

1. The effects of unpleasant oral hygiene are experienced on the mouth alone.

An unpleasant oral hygiene is accountable not only on the condition of the whole oral cavity but also in the body. This is basically true when a certain expectant mother is not practicing good oral health. The child inside her womb gets the needed nutrition from the mother’s body. Time will come that the mother might loose some of the calcium in her body due to the increasing needs of the fetus. Poor dental hygiene of the mother is more likely to come up with a child prone to tooth decay.

2. Ingesting more sugar can bring greater possibility of tooth decay.

It is not the actual amount of the sugar that matters but on how long sugar stays in the oral cavity. The longer it stays the more chances that the bacteria will be acting on the sugar, making the teeth more prone to tartar and tooth decay.

3. Extracting the baby tooth due to tooth decay is just normal and OK.

People usually believe that the baby tooth extracted due to tooth decay is insignificant without knowing that the tooth decay generally affects the formation of the crowns in the teeth. Furthermore, it is not a good habit for a child to treat the dental hygiene poorly which is likely to develop as the child age.

4. Osteoporosis is only experienced in spine and hip.

Osteoporosis affects the whole bone composition in the body. The teeth may have insufficient supply of calcium because the teeth are still connected to the jaw bone, which is also a part of the whole skeletal system.

5. Having denture is believed to have a positive effect on the person’s diet.

Unfit denture can lead the way into diving on for softer foods. Basically, the dentures should perfectly fit the oral cavity to be able to feel more comfort.

6. It is only the young people who experiences dental decay.

People of all ages are probable to suffer from oral health ailments. It is not just due to the age of the person but also to the practices, food and liquids that are ingested, and how the person takes good care of the whole oral cavity.

Myths are just mere misinterpretations which have rooted in similar cases noted. The bunch of true information resides on the professionals whom made their way into properly informing the people on the truth which lies behind the myths that were disseminated many years ago.
